Fire & Overheat Detection
Fire and Overheat Detectors for Aerospace
No maintenance required
Airline operators demand fire detectors that are highly reliable - the cost of a turn back due to false fire alarm is enormous. Our pneumatic detectors are highly immune to false alarms and require no scheduled maintenance.
Over 90% of western commercial aircraft are equipped with our failsafe fire and overheat detectors.
With a 50-year history in fire detection technology we can provide the right solution for your application including:
- pneumatic detectors
- thermistor detectors
- optical smoke detectors
Years of experience in fire detection
Designed for zones experiencing extremes of temperature and vibration our pneumatic detectors have the market-defining reliability. Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) exceeds 500,000 hours.
How it works
The pneumatic detector has two sensing functions. When a rise in average temperature across the whole overheat sensor raises the pressure of the helium gas contained within the detector, an alarm is triggered. This design eliminates the risk of false alarm from individual hotspots. The detector also uses hydrogen to trigger an alarm when pressure increases due to highly localised heat caused by flame or hot gases.
Protection against internal faults is provided by an additional switch, held closed by the helium gas pressure. In the case of a leak, loss of gas pressure causes the integrity switch to open and signal a failure.

50-year history in cutting-edge thermistor technology.
Lower maintenance costs
With the ability to feed into an aircraft’s Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) system, our thermistor detectors can continuously monitor temperature to saves fuel and ensure lower maintenance cost.
How it works
As the ambient temperature in the detection zone increases, resistance of the detector cable decreases. When the resistance drops to a pre-determined value, within 5 seconds, the control unit activates a cockpit alarm.

Thanks to dynamic discrimination of alarm conditions and next-generation digital signal processing, we can track smoke particles in real-time, enabling system optimisation and minimising aircraft certification risks.
How it works
Our optical detectors constantly analyse air in cargo compartments and avionics bays, discriminating between smoke and nuisance particles.
Detector threshold and overall system sensitivity can be adjusted to account for varying conditions during different aircraft operations, such as potentially higher levels of dust when on the ground or when cargo doors are open.
With unprecedented reliability and accuracy, the system gathers real-time intelligent data, and can optimise testing and improve installation design. When a true signal is detected, the system alerts the crew.

Our fire detector systems are fitted on a large majority of commercial aircraft including Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Dassault and Learjet programmes.
We have extensive experience in certifying fire protection systems for aircraft.
