Meggitt Aircraft Braking Systems has been awarded the autobrake system for Gulfstream’s G650 and G650ER aircraft
The new automatic braking feature will be introduced through Gulfstream’s service network into braking systems already supplied by Meggitt, and becoming standard on future production aircraft.
While automatic braking systems have been available for commercial transport aircraft for many years as standalone systems, they have been too expensive for business jets. With the advent of digital brake-by-wire control systems, the function can now be added into the system cost-effectively as a software module.
Automatic braking systems apply the level of braking required to maintain the selected deceleration level immediately upon touchdown. However, this system is unique, allowing for controlled braking during the landing de-rotation phase after the main wheels have touched down but before touchdown of the nose gear. De-rotation braking gives pilots greater control over nose gear touchdown and improves braking by initiating it earlier in the landing phase. The system will also automatically apply the maximum brake pressure needed to bring an aircraft to the shortest possible stop after a high speed rejected take-off.
Luke Durudogan, President, Meggitt Aircraft Braking Systems commented: ‘This leading edge development work with Gulfstream on automatic braking further extends Meggitt’s demonstrated expertise in ATA32 control and monitoring, a key tranche in our growth strategy.’
Meggitt is sole supplier of braking systems for Gulfstream’s entire in-service fleet and line of production aircraft.
