Meggitt’s unique radome assembly finds first direct sale to a commercial airframer
Meggitt Polymers & Composites, a division of Meggitt PLC, the international aerospace, defence and energy engineering group, was awarded a contract with aircraft manufacturer Embraer, for the design and production of a high performance radome assembly for in-flight connectivity (IFC). This is Meggitt’s first direct sale for a radome assembly, awarded for ‘Best Value’ after an extensive industry-wide competition. The agreement with Embraer provides a linefit solution for the E2 platform, and a linefit and retrofit option for E1 aircraft.
Meggitt will design, manufacture and assemble Embraer’s installation kit, comprised of a radome, skirt seal, adapter plate and fittings, in Meggitt’s advanced composites facility in Rockmart, Georgia, USA. One of the key benefits to this unique assembly is the tri-band radome capability, allowing each aircraft to be tailored to the customer’s preferred antenna manufacturer. Another is Meggitt’s exclusive ARINC 791 adapter plate, made of lightweight, advanced composite materials, which will set the new standard over the current aluminum products used today.
Meggitt Polymers & Composites President David Horner commented: ‘From a fledgling commercial radome programme inherited as part of our advanced composites acquisitions in late 2015, I am delighted to have seen the exceptional progress to the creation of a low-risk, convenient, field-proven assembly for airframers and airlines. This award makes us an exclusive provider of our unique kit of parts to one of the most progressive aircraft manufacturers in the world and we are challenging our industry’s market leaders.’
‘We progressed the capability, improving manufacturability. From a standing start in our Rockmart factory until now, we have successfully delivered over 750 units with a high level of quality and on-time delivery.’
