New Tunes to Break the Ice

We’re now leading a €6 million European Union research project which aims for a 90% reduction.

Innovations include ‘PiezoPaint’, super-thin layers of piezoceramic which vibrate at different frequencies when charged with an electrical current. Varying the “tune” unsticks and breaks off the ice.

GAINS—Green Airframe Icing Novel Systems—is a European Union Clean Sky 2 (CS2) Joint Technology Initiative.

GAINS Project partners

Project partners are: Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (Sheffield, UK), AeroTex, Airbus, Dassault Aviation, European Union Clean Sky, Italian Aerospace Research Centre (CIRA), Precision Micro (Meggitt), University of Nottingham, University of Sheffield, Ultra Electronics (PALS)
