Y8 flight instrument upgrade for Meggitt

Chengdu CAIC Electronics Co has chosen Meggitt Avionics to upgrade the existing secondary flight instruments on the AVIC Shaanxi Aircraft Industry (Group) Corporation’s Y8 medium-heavy transport aircraft.

Meggitt Avionics, which designs and manufacturers flight deck displays, air data and life support systems, has equipped the Y8 with its third-generation integrated secondary flight display (iSFD) and magnetic heading sensor (MHS) for CAIC’s flight display upgrade programme.

Meggitt’s high resolution iSFD complements modern glass cockpits, integrating attitude, altitude, air speed and heading data through internal inertial and air data sensors.  The result is a highly reliable, standalone instrument. First introduced to the market in 1995 as a back-up to primary digital cockpits, iSFD presents vital flight data matching the appearance of primary displays.  It is LED-backlit with low power consumption and has no ITAR restrictions.

The fully solid state MHS provides accurate and fully stabilised heading when used as part of the secondary flight display system. It requires no maintenance or periodic calibration. It can be used as an independent second heading source or as a primary instrument.

The iSFD and MHS are installed on over 40 different aircraft programmes, totalling over 5,000 in service worldwide.

Joe Morgan, Director Sales & Marketing Meggitt Avionics commented: “We are delighted with Meggitt’s first successful collaboration with an AVIC company and plan to continue our strategy to strengthen and support this key growth market”
