Meggitt Aerospace Asia Pacific signed a lease agreement on February 15, 2012 with JTC, an industrial infrastructure specialist in Singapore. With a 2,000-square metre factory unit in Seletar Aerospace Park, Meggitt is the first tenant of JTC’s Component Manufacturing and MRO Facility (CMMF).
Meggitt’s Asia Pacific maintenance repair and overhaul, field technical support and parts distribution facility is expanding its aftermarket support services and moving its Loyang Way operation to the Park, a brand-new aerospace hub in the island state in June 2012.
The new facility will support and provide aftermarket support for an extended range of Meggitt products including wheels and brakes, engine heat exchangers, solenoid and bleed valves, engine vibration sensing systems, fire detection and suppression equipment, crew restraints and Emergency Passenger Assist Systems.
Adrian Plevin, Vice President & General Manager, Meggitt Aerospace Asia Pacific commented: “Moving our operations to Seletar Aerospace Park enables us to retain high-quality employees, grow in a complex with some of the world’s best aerospace companies as neighbours and provides a facility that can be adapted easily to support our growing operations.”
He added, “This relocation is timely: there are many new platforms coming into service in the Asia Pacific region such as the A380, B787, ARJ21 and A350, all of which will require optimal support from local suppliers. We will be offering an expanded and highly responsive service from one local Meggitt aftermarket centre, with dedicated support and inventory and reduced logistics costs for our customers.”
Meggitt’s operation in Asia has seen a 50% increase in turnover from 2009 to 2011. MRO business grew by 30% last year and Plevin expects this to treble in volume when the new facility is fully operational. The workforce will expand from 30 to 40 staff with the move. Technicians working on new product lines are currently training through secondments to Meggitt’s original equipment manufacturers in Europe and North America.
Comments from Leow Thiam Seng, JTC’s Director for the Aerospace, Marine & CleanTech Cluster, included: “Meggitt’s presence in the Seletar Aerospace Park will further augment synergies in the integrated environment … aerospace companies with components manufacturing and MRO functions are integral and important to the aerospace value chain.”
Comments from Lim Kok Kiang, Executive Director, Transport Engineering, Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB), included: “Meggitt, as a pioneer tenant, will add to the thriving aerospace ecosystem in Singapore. With this, and other new developments at Seletar, we are confident that Singapore will remain the choice location for leading aerospace companies in this part of the world.”
Meggitt Aerospace Asia Pacific will take up one of eight standard factory units in the CMMF, which was completed in October 2011. The new SGD $30 million development occupies a 3.5 hectare site at the south of Seletar Aerospace Park designed for component manufacturing and MRO companies requiring column-free, high-ceiling facilities with large floor plates and a high loading capacity.
JTC says that companies at the Seletar Aerospace Park will enjoy economies of scale and increased efficiency. The park’s shared infrastructure, close proximity of suppliers, customers and partners within a tightly-knit aerospace business community should also boost new industry collaborations.
