Bombardier orders Meggitt’s new-generation fire protection

17 August 2009

Meggitt’s wins full ATA 26 fire protection system on Bombardier Learjet 85 aircraft

Meggitt has won the contract for its new-generation fire detection and extinguishing system (“FIDEX”) on the Learjet 85 aircraft, Bombardier’s new all-composite business jet.

The system, which includes advanced fire and smoke detection equipment and Pacific Scientific fire extinguishing components, protects the engines, auxiliary power unit and cargo compartments of the aircraft.

Meggitt’s fire protection and control system features the company’s latest generation controller and has been designed to provide increased functionality over traditional units. The controller monitors the entire fire protection system and reports key data to the flight deck for action by crew or automatic systems shut-down. The Meggitt system uses algorithms that can differentiate between true and false alarms maximising aircraft dispatchability without compromising safety.

This fully-integrated package provides single supplier advantages for the Learjet 85 program reducing cost and risk, and through the modular approach to systems, electronics and software design, will reduce programme development risk for a range of aircraft manufacturers.

As a full FAA/EASA-approved Air Transportation Association (ATA) Chapter 26 fire protection system, the win is strategically important to Meggitt Safety Systems. Chris Larsen, Meggitt Safety Systems’ Vice President of Marketing & Program Management explains: “Meggitt has a legacy of fire detection components and sub-systems on 90% of western commercial aircraft in service. Now, with this demonstration of enhanced level of system engineering activity wrapped up in a single package, we can maintain Meggitt’s position as a leading supplier of fire detection and protection systems to the global aircraft market.”

Bombardier and Learjet 85 are registered or unregistered trademarks of Bombardier Inc. or its subsidiaries.
