Meggitt Defense Systems’ facility in Tustin, California, successfully completed initial flight testing of the GT-400 glide target at a range in Southern California.

The GT-400, which is towed before being released for combat engagement, is the first of its kind in and puts MDS at the forefront of providing next-generation, affordable targets for air-to-air missile defence training. The target is also suitable for long and medium-range surface-to-air missile defence training.

“The GT-400 is a leading-edge target from a business with a long history in targets, pods, and aeromechanical structures,” said MDS (Tustin) President Roger Brum. “This experience has enabled us to develop a unique product that offers a low cost solution to modern missile target training systems, which restrict the use of manned tow aircraft due to their longer range capabilities.”

The second half of 2004 will see Meggitt working with potential customers to gain aircraft flight clearance for the GT-400 as a towed target and range certification as a glide target.
